Where Does Adult Acne Come From? Photo

Acne doesn’t stop after your teenage years, unfortunately. But even if you accept the fact you may get acne as an adult, it doesn’t make it any less frustrating. Adult acne is actually more common than most people think. People from the age of 20 to 50 generally don’t think they have to worry about acne, but it’s possible for random flare-ups to occur. The worst part is the treatment methods you used as a teenager probably won’t work now in your adult life. Before you opt for acne scar treatments, it’s important to learn where adult acne comes from so you can take steps to eliminate it.

1. Hormone Fluctuations

Both men and women can get adult acne, but it is more common in women. Hormone fluctuations could cause acne to flare up in certain instances. This could be the result of menopause, stopping or changing birth control pills, changing medication or other circumstances.

2. High Stress Levels

When we are stressed, our bodies naturally produce more androgens. Androgens stimulate hair follicles and oil glands, which could lead to acne. Many older people feel like they have no choice but to undergo acne scar removal treatments since they’ve had acne for the majority of their adult life. Stress sometimes can’t be avoided, but if you begin getting adult acne, try reducing stress as much as possible to see if it clears up.

3. Skin Care Products

Our skin changes over time, which could make it more sensitive to the same skin care products you’ve used for years. Check the ingredients on your products and make sure they are oil-free and are designed to not clog pores. These products include moisturizers, sunscreens, cleansers and other similar products.

4. Genetics

If your ancestors had acne as an adult, chances are you will experience some form of adult acne as well. Undergoing acne scar revision may be inevitable if genetics are involved in your adult acne.

5. Side Effects to Medication

Adult acne flare-ups can happen, so be sure to monitor the medication you take to determine whether it is connected to the flare-ups. If you believe the medication you take may be related to your acne, be sure to consult a doctor to see if your medication can be switched.
