Burke Melasma Treatment

Laser Removal of Dark Skin Patches

Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by dark, discolored patches of skin. It usually occurs on the face and appears as noticeable gray-brown patches around the cheeks, forehead, and nose. This skin condition can be frustrating because it takes many different forms. While some cases will go away on their own, severe instances may remain even after a full round of professional skincare treatment. At Skin Deep Laser Services, we can assess your melasma and recommend an appropriate treatment. Our team consists of experienced dermatologists equipped with the latest laser technology.

Who is Affected by Melasma?

Melasma is more common in women than it is in men. It is also more likely to appear in people with dark skin, including people of Hispanic, African, Indian, and Asian descent. You have an increased risk of developing melasma if someone in your family has/had it.

As of now, there is no definitive cause of melasma. We know that it occurs when melanocytes in the skin go into overdrive and produce too much color. This is why it is more common in people with dark skin, as they have more melanocytes than lighter skinned people. Research has suggested that some external factors can increase your risk for melasma.

The following could be contributing causes to melasma:

  • Pregnancy
  • Too much sun exposure
  • Hormonal changes
  • Irritating skin products
  • Birth control pills
  • Stress
  • Thyroid disease
  • Hormone disorders

Skin Resurfacing Treatment

Melasma will sometimes go away on its own, particularly if it was triggered by birth control pills or pregnancy. In many cases, however, melasma can last for years. There are some instances where it has lasted for a person’s entire life.

At Skin Deep Laser Services, we use lasers to perform a skin resurfacing treatment. This treatment applies heat to the skin to stimulate collagen production and hasten skin repair. After assessing your case of melasma, our experienced dermatologists can tell you if skin resurfacing is an appropriate treatment for your situation.
