Burke Hyperpigmentation Treatment

Tell Us What You Would Like Removed

Do you have spots of skin that are darker than the rest? This is called hyperpigmentation, a common condition caused by excess melanin production. While this condition is usually harmless, many people dislike the way it looks on their skin and wish to have it removed. At Skin Deep Laser Services, we offer a safe, non-invasive treatment for hyperpigmentation using state-of-the-art laser technology.

If you’d like to schedule an appointment for hyperpigmentation removal at our skin care clinic in Burke, call us today at (703) 639-4446.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation

Many people are surprised when they discover hyperpigmentation on their skin. These spots can appear at any time to people of any age. Sometimes they are caused by external factors such as too much sun exposure, but usually they are the result of changes going on inside the body.

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by the following:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Too much sun exposure
  • Certain kinds of antibiotics
  • Anti-seizure medications

There are three types of hyperpigmentation: melisma, sun sports, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Melasma usually occurs during pregnancy and typically appears on the face, though it can occur anywhere. Sunspots are caused by too much sun exposure and usually show up on the hands and face. Post-inflammatory pigmentation is the result of a skin injury.

Thankfully, hyperpigmentation is usually not the sign of something serious. However, you should speak with a doctor if your family has a history of endocrine or hormonal disorder and hyperpigmentation starts appearing on your body.

How Laser Treatment Works

The typical laser treatment for hyperpigmentation is called skin resurfacing. In this treatment, a targeted beam of light is applied to the hyperpigmented area. For very dark patches of skin, an ablative laser will be used. Ablative lasers remove layers of the skin, making the way for new, more toned skin to grow back in its place. Non-ablative lasers won’t peel away skin layers, but they do promote collagen growth and tighten the skin.

The condition of your skin and severity of the hyperpigmentation will determine what kind of laser treatment is right for you. Our experienced dermatologists will provide you with their recommendation after examining your skin and learning more about your goals.
