Blood vessels in the leg have to transport blood through the legs and back up to the heart. If a valve in the blood vessels down here weakens, it can fail to push the blood back up to the heart, which leaves blood to pool in the veins. Eventually, these veins will start to bulge through the skin resulting in the condition commonly referred to as spider or varicose veins.

How Laser Treatment Works

During a laser therapy session, a focused beam of light is applied over the skin towards the spider veins. The heat from the laser will penetrate the skin and help the blood in the vein coagulate. This will allow the vein to collapse and seal itself off. The spider vein will slowly disappear in the coming weeks as the body clears out the collapsed blood cells. This method of treatment does not require any injections or incisions.

Laser spider vein removal is not painful. You will feel something on your skin when the laser hits, but this should be no more than a mild tingling sensation. However, this treatment is not for everyone. Laser spider vein removal is typically used to treat milder cases. If you have more severe varicose veins, laser therapy may not be the right treatment.

How to Prevent Spider Veins

If someone in your family has spider veins, or if you have had them in the past, then there is a risk they will appear again. There are some things you can do at home to prevent them from reoccurring:

• Exercise
• Don’t spend too long in hot baths
• Keep your legs elevated
• Get up and walk around every 30 minutes when sitting for long periods
• Take a break from standing every 30 minutes

It is not possible to get rid of existing spider veins with these methods, but they can help you prevent new ones from forming.
